Location: Mutasa District, Manicaland Province
Implementing Partners: The David Munowenyu Foundation & Discovery Ambulance Services
Focus Area: Emergency medical access, rehabilitation, and social reintegration

Context
Mutasa District is characterized by difficult terrain and a high prevalence of informal mining activities, where serious injuries are common and access to emergency medical services is limited. For many residents, severe injury often results in long-term disability or death—not due to the absence of clinical expertise, but due to delayed or inaccessible care.
Karl Max Mukwindidza, a resident of the district, became a victim of this systemic gap when a mine collapse left him with severe spinal injuries. For five years, Karl Max remained bedridden at home, unable to access specialist care or rehabilitation services. His family, lacking both financial means and emergency transport, had exhausted all options.

Intervention
In May 2023, The David Munowenyu Foundation conducted a two-day medical outreach in Manicaland Province, deploying a 40-member multidisciplinary team through Discovery Ambulance Services. The outreach provided free medical consultations, medication, and essential health services to thousands of community members.
Through referrals from local leadership, the team identified Karl Max and conducted an immediate on-site assessment. Recognizing the urgency and complexity of his condition, Discovery Ambulance Services activated emergency referral protocols and transported him to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for further evaluation.
Given the severity of his injuries, Karl Max was subsequently transferred under clinical supervision to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where specialists confirmed irreversible spinal damage requiring long-term management rather than surgical correction. He was then referred to Ruwa Rehabilitation Centre to begin structured rehabilitation and wound care.

Results
After eight months of continuous rehabilitation, Karl Max was medically discharged, having achieved significant improvements in mobility, overall health, and quality of life. Timely emergency transport and coordinated referral care prevented further deterioration and life-threatening complications.
Beyond medical recovery, the intervention prioritized long-term dignity and independence. The David Munowenyu Foundation facilitated Karl Max’s enrolment at Danhiko Industrial Training College, where he is currently in his final semester studying Garment Construction

Sustainable Impact

To support social and economic reintegration, the Foundation is actively preparing for Karl Max’s transition into formal employment at Discovery Ambulance Services, where he will contribute by producing uniforms for ambulance crews and staff. This approach ensures that recovery extends beyond survival to meaningful participation and self-reliance.
